  • WHAT WE THINK

The Big Agnes V Notch UL 40 Synthetic Sleeping Bag is an excellent choice for those seeking a lightweight and packable sleeping bag that still offers warmth and comfort, especially on milder nights. We took it out on a late-spring camping trip in the Lake District, and it performed surprisingly well, even when temperatures dipped a little lower than expected. The 40°F (4°C) rating is ideal for three-season use in the UK, and we found it kept us comfortable without overheating on warmer nights, while still offering enough warmth when the temperature dropped.

The bag also has some smart features, like a snug, ergonomic fit and the innovative V-shaped baffles, which help with heat retention. The fit is more "mummy" style, so it might feel a bit snug for those who prefer more room to move around at night, but it definitely helps with warmth efficiency, especially around the core and feet. The foot box is roomy enough, though, and you won't feel cramped at the bottom, which is a nice touch for a lightweight bag.

That said, there are a couple of things to consider before buying. For starters, while the synthetic insulation does well in moisture, it’s still not as warm or compressible as high-quality down, so if you're expecting freezing temperatures or need a bag for colder conditions, you might want to look at a lower-temperature-rated option. Also, for those who are used to the plush feel of down, the synthetic fill can feel a bit less luxurious, though it does the job in terms of warmth and durability.

Overall, the Big Agnes V Notch UL 40 Synthetic Sleeping Bag is a fantastic choice for those looking for a lightweight, reliable sleeping bag for spring and summer camping in the UK. It performs well in a variety of conditions, dries quickly if it gets damp, and is comfortable for most three-season scenarios. Just make sure you’re okay with a snug fit and not expecting it to handle freezing temps, and it’ll serve you well on most UK camping adventures.
