reviews
"Well constructed, smooth sealed zipper function and seemingly durably material. Have a Rab raincoat which does not have the same degree of durability. Had the opportunity to wear this in a variety of rainy conditions over the last 3 weeks. Remained dry with no wet through after 70 minutes of light to moderate steady rain."
"I haven't used the jacket yet, but the material and construction look great (as expected from OR)." -
what we think
Dan at Valley and Peak tested the Outdoor Research Foray 3L extensively since last October in varied environments like the wet hills of Snowdonia and the frozen expanse of Lake Inari in Finland. The jacket uses Outdoor Research’s AscentShell Dry 3-layer fabric, which isn’t Gore-Tex but performs well as a waterproof and breathable membrane. Made from recycled nylon with mechanical stretch and treated with a PFAS-free durable water repellent, it handled rain, snow, and wind effectively.
One standout feature is the TorsoFlo ventilation system, offering a full-length zip from hem to bicep that provides excellent airflow when working hard or layered up. This made a noticeable difference during active pursuits or when carrying heavy packs. The jacket balances waterproofing and breathability well, keeping the wearer dry without causing overheating.
The fit is a bit roomier than some jackets, which works well for layering but might feel boxy for those who prefer slimmer cuts. The stretch fabric helps with mobility and comfort. At about 435 grams, the jacket isn’t ultralight but its durability and reliable protection justify the weight, especially for longer trips where gear failure isn’t an option.
Additional features like the adjustable hood with bonded brim, YKK AquaGuard zippers, and well-placed pockets add functionality without bulk. Overall, the Foray 3L is a robust, versatile shell that performs well in a variety of weather. It’s not the lightest or sleekest option, but it’s a trustworthy piece of kit for dependable protection in unpredictable conditions. -
