WHAT WE THINK
We took the Black Diamond Storm 500R on a recent team campout in the Peak District, and it quickly became a bit of a favourite. This headlamp packs a serious punch for its size, delivering powerful performance and a ton of useful features without weighing you down.
At just 100g, it’s light enough for trail running but versatile enough for hiking, climbing, mountaineering, and those long nights around the campsite. We put it through its paces on late-evening hikes and early-morning runs, and its 500-lumen output and 120m beam distance made finding the trail easy - even in low-visibility conditions. On its highest setting, the battery lasts about seven hours, and the rechargeable lithium-ion battery handled the cold with no issues. A quick micro-USB charge kept it going strong, so no need to pack spare batteries.
We were also impressed by the Storm 500R’s durability. With an IP67 rating, it’s waterproof enough to withstand being submerged in up to a metre of water for 30 minutes - and it handled some serious Peak District downpours like a champ. The recycled elastic headband stayed comfortable and kept the beam steady, even on more technical terrain.
With proximity, distance, and night vision modes - plus strobe and brightness memory — this little headlamp covers everything you’d want for multi-sport adventures. Black Diamond’s Storm series already has a great reputation, and the 500R only strengthens it. Highly recommended for anyone who wants a tough, reliable headlamp for all conditions.
