The palms are made from tough 70D ripstop nylon, while the outer shell features 20D ripstop nylon with a water-repellent finish, offering excellent durability and protection. The gauntlet cuff is equipped with a slim shock cord and cordlock, ensuring a snug fit to keep out cold winds and snow. When not in use, the Torrid Mitts pack down compactly, fitting effortlessly into your pack, always ready for your next adventure.

At Valley and Peak, we’ve had the chance to test the Enlightened Equipment Torrid Mitts, and they’ve proven to be an excellent choice for lightweight warmth during colder conditions. These mitts are filled with synthetic insulation, making them a great option for those seeking reliable warmth even in damp conditions, unlike down, which can lose its insulating properties when wet.
The Torrid Mitts are incredibly lightweight and packable, easily fitting into your bag or even your pocket when not in use, making them ideal for hiking and wild camping adventures where space and weight are at a premium.
The fit of the Torrid Mitts runs half a size up, which is ideal for those looking for a more comfortable, looser fit—especially if you plan to layer them over thinner gloves or liners in really cold conditions. This extra space provides a better ability to trap warmth, enhancing their performance in colder weather. The soft interior ensures comfort even during extended wear, and the snug wrist closure helps keep heat in and prevent drafts.
During our testing, the Torrid Mitts effectively kept our hands warm, even in chilly conditions, and the synthetic insulation dried quickly, which is a big plus in wet environments. However, while they’re excellent for providing warmth in moderate cold, they may not be sufficient for extremely cold temperatures on their own.
In such conditions, layering them with more insulated gloves or combining them with a robust layering system would be beneficial. Overall, the Torrid Mitts are a fantastic lightweight, packable option for 3-season or milder winter conditions, with the added bonus of being roomy enough for layering in colder weather.
