  • What we think

We tested these poles in the Lake District, particularly on the challenging ascent of Helvellyn, one of the region’s highest peaks. While the Leki Makalu Trekking Poles are generally reliable and perform well in many respects, they do have a few aspects worth considering before deciding if they are the right choice for your hiking needs.

On the rocky paths and steep ascents of Helvellyn, these poles felt incredibly stable and sturdy. The Speed Lock+ System for adjusting the pole length was simple to use, allowing for easy adjustments to suit the varying terrains we encountered. Whether navigating narrow ridges or rocky sections, the poles offered reliable support, which helped alleviate pressure on the knees during the more taxing parts of the hike.

However, while the Leki Makalu Trekking Poles performed well overall, we did find that they lacked the lightweight feel of some other trekking poles in the same range. At times, particularly on the more technical sections of Helvellyn, we felt the poles could have been a bit more responsive and rigid. While they offered solid support, the poles did feel a little heavier compared to carbon fibre alternatives, which could be a consideration for those prioritising weight reduction for long-distance hikes or faster ascents.

Overall, the Leki Makalu Trekking Poles are a strong, reliable option for anyone tackling difficult hikes like Helvellyn in the Lake District. They provide excellent support, comfort, and stability, making them a great choice for hikers looking for durability in a variety of conditions. However, if you’re seeking the lightest possible poles or need the ultimate in stiffness and responsiveness for more technical terrain, you may want to explore other options. Nonetheless, the Leki Makalu Trekking Poles deliver solid performance and durability, making them a worthwhile investment for most outdoor enthusiasts.
