  • what we think

The MSR Freelite 2 is an appealing option for backpackers who want to cut weight without giving up the comfort of a proper tent for two. We’ve used it across a range of UK conditions, and it sits in that nice middle ground between minimalist and practical.

What we noticed straight away is how packable the Freelite 2 is. It’s genuinely light enough to consider for solo use if you want extra room, but the footprint and weight still make it very workable as a two-person tent. Once packed down, it fits easily into most rucksacks without dominating your gear layout, which is always a win.

Pitching is quick and mostly intuitive. The semi-freestanding design means it holds its shape well, though you’ll still need to peg out the corners properly for best tension. Once it’s up, there’s a decent amount of interior space for two people. It’s snug, yes, but far from cramped. If you're sharing with someone you're happy to sleep close to, it's entirely workable. The twin side doors and vestibules make entry and gear storage much easier and stop you having to climb over one another during the night.

Performance-wise, the Freelite 2 is best suited for moderate conditions. It stands up to light rain and wind well, and the fly offers good protection. That said, when the wind picks up beyond 20mph, you’ll want to pitch in a more sheltered spot to avoid stressing the lighter frame and fabrics. Ventilation is good for a double-wall tent, and condensation was rarely an issue during our testing.

As with most tents in this weight class, materials are on the thinner side. It’s not a tent you want to be rough with, and some care is needed when choosing your pitch site. That said, MSR's build quality is reassuring. The seams are well sealed, the zips are smooth, and overall the construction feels dependable for what it's designed for.

Storage and organisation inside are fairly minimal but sensible. You’ve got a few mesh pockets and enough room to stash essentials. The removable rainfly gives the option for stargazing or a bit of extra airflow on calm nights, which is a nice touch.

While it won’t appeal to those who want maximum space or the absolute toughest build, the Freelite 2 strikes a strong balance for those looking to keep things light and streamlined without sacrificing too much comfort. It’s a good choice for experienced backpackers and long-distance walkers who value space-efficiency and want a bit more living room than a 1-person tent allows.

"The FreeLite is a great light two person tent. My wife and I recently used it on a 6 day backpacking trip and we fit comfortably inside. Having the twin vestibules was a huge plus too! The tent easily withstood rain and hail. Yay! The only con is that the rain fly gutter doesn’t work well. After a rain storm, I opened the rain fly and water instantly dropped on me and inside the tent. All in all though, I’d highly recommended this tent for two people who want a light sturdy backpacking tent. Cheers!"

"So light! So easy to set up! No complaints! It is super spacious for just me, but I can see that there will be enough room for two of us when I bring my husband along next time (but packs will have to go out in the vestibules)."

"So far this tent has been awesome! It’s light and packs up well. It held the rain out and it kept me dry during our rainy New England season!"
