Looking for a broad range of tents and shelters? From something for a short camping trip all the way to a large tent for longer trips, we have you covered.

From lightweight tents for the ultralight thru-hiker to group-size expedition tents, there's a lot to be said for research.

There is a huge range of trekking tents and shelters available and often it can seem like a minefield when it comes to choosing, from 1 person tents, 2 person tents and 3+ person tents from well-established brands like Big Agnes and MSR to consider, but it's worth looking into niche brands if they offer something different or customised to your needs.

When weighing up which tent to invest in, it's probably best to think about function over any other features initially. Think about length of trip, weather conditions, who will be staying in the tent and try and meet these criteria first. Making your decision whether it is a lightweight backpacking tent or a larger option after this should be easy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which tents are best for camping?

If you're in search of a tent or shelter, there are several different types available, each having their own set of unique features and benefits. Things for you to consider when choosing your tent are factors such as; the number of people it can accommodate, the weather conditions the tent is designed for and its weight and packed size. Some popular tent options include:

Backpacking tents: Lightweight and compact, these tents are ideal for camping in remote locations or for carrying on long hikes, trips and expeditions.

Family tents: Perfect for family camping trips, these are larger tents that can accommodate more people, often featuring multiple rooms, an entrance and even a separate area for gear storage.

4-Season tents: These are designed for use in all seasons and provide additional protection against wind and snow. Ideal for enthusiasts who go camping throughout the year, whatever the weather.

Ultralight tents: If you're wanting a tent for easy carry, then an ultralight tent is the ideal one for you. These tents are designed for their ultra light weight and pack size, making them great for backpacking, thru-hiking and long expeditions.

Ultimately, the decision is yours to make and your individual needs and preferences will allow you to choose the tent that's right for you.

What tents are used on Everest?

The best outdoor tents for expeditions are typically high-altitude, four-season tents. These tents are specifically designed to withstand the extreme weather conditions found at high elevations, including strong winds, heavy snowfall, and sub-zero temperatures.

Are tents waterproof?

Most modern tents are designed to be waterproof to a certain degree, but as to how waterproof they are? Well, that really depends on the tent's design and materials its made from. Tents typically have a waterproof coating on the fabric, which is called its "rainfly." The rainfly is the outer layer of the tent, covering the top and sides and is designed to keep rain and other precipitation at bay.

However, it's important to note that even a tent with a waterproof rainfly isn't entirely waterproof. Water may still get in the tent through the zippers, vents, and seams.

Therefore, it's often recommended to use a tent footprint for added protection, which is a separate piece of waterproof fabric that goes under the tent.

Which tents are the warmest?

Nothing beats a warm night sleep when camping outdoors and so checking the tent type is very important. Trust us, it will make all the difference. Some factors to consider when choosing a tent for warmth are its insulation, ventilation, and the fabric it is made from. Some popular warm tent options include:

4-Season tents: As the name implies, 4-season tents are designed to be used all year round and provide added protection against wind and snow. They are typically more insulated than 3-season tents and have fewer mesh panels to reduce drafts.

Expedition Tents: If you're embarking on a great expedition, then this tent is exactly what you need. Built for extreme conditions, expedition tents are perfect for if you're venturing to high altitudes or the polar regions, providing you with good insulation and ventilation for comfort. Additionally, they are designed to be able to withstand high winds and heavy snowfall.

Mountaineering Tents: If you’re going to be sleeping in the great outdoors in high altitudes, then make sure you purchase a mountaineering tent. These tents have been crafted to withstand extreme weather conditions and will provide you with good insulation and ventilation.

Where to store a tent?

A tent is a great investment and taking good care of it will allow you to utilise it for years and years to come. How and where you store your tent will play a huge role in keeping it protected from potential hazards such as moisture, mould and UV Rays. Great tent care will keep it persevered, meaning you will have it for a very long time.

Here are Valley and Peak's tips on how best to store your tent:

First, clean your tent before storing it away. Remove any dirt, grass stains, debris, or mildew from the tent and allow it to completely dry out before storing it. You don’t want to unpack a dirty tent next time you use it.

Store the tent in a cool, dry place. Try and avoid storing your tent or shelter in an area that’s prone to damp or humidity, as this can lead to mildew growth.

The majority of tents come with a storage bag to keep it in and this can help you protect it from dust and moisture.

What should I look for in a 3 season tent?

It is important to be aware and have knowledge of the key factors when deciding to purchase a three-season tent. Here is a list of features you need to look out for:

1. Weather Resistance: Rain, wind, and moderate snow should be something that the three-season tent should be able to counter and protect anyone or anything inside the tent. Buying tents made of water-resistant fabric or materials with sealed seams and a rainfly to completely cover the tent and prevent anything inside from getting wet.

2. Ventilation: Good ventilation is needed as it will reduce condensation and maintain the tent’s interior to remain dry and comfy. It is ideal to choose tents with windows or mesh panels so air can enter the tent.

3. Durability: Whether you use your tent frequently, an excellent three-season tent must be durable and withstand various conditions. A three-season tent should be durable enough to withstand frequent use in a variety of conditions. Ripstop nylon or polyester and strong poles and stakes are sturdy materials highly likely to pass the durability aspect you seek.

4. Weight and Size: When buying a backpacking tent, weight and size are crucial factors in making the tent portable. Tents with a compact design made from lightweight materials are good choices for purchasing.

5. Livable Space: The interior space is where you can sleep and store your needed gear; with that, look for a tent with enough interior space to accommodate the people using the tent and all the equipment. A tent with plenty of headroom and floor space will guarantee that you and your company can move freely and comfortably.

6. Ease of Set-Up: Buy tents that won’t take you several minutes to be set up or taken down, as it will waste your much-valued time. Purchase ones with clear and straightforward instructions and excellent design features that will benefit you.

7. Additional Features: Try to think of any additional features you might also need. For example, multiple doors will provide easy access, vestibules will allow you to store your gear, and interior pockets enable you to organize your smaller items so they won’t get lost or misplaced.

Knowing that the tent will become your shelter during outdoor trips, all these seven factors must be carefully checked to ensure you and your company remain safe and comfortable.
