In 1982, Hartmut Ortlieb founded ORTLIEB Sportartikel GmbH in Nuremberg, Germany. Driven by a personal need for waterproof gear, Hartmut crafted the first ORTLIEB bike panniers using his mother’s sewing machine, creating dry bags and bicycle panniers from truck tarps. Today, the company boasts a diverse collection of over 500 products for the bike, bikepacking and outdoor market. The entire production process, from development and design to engineering, marketing, and shipping, remains centralised at the German headquarters in Heilsbronn.
