Founded in Golden, Colorado in 1979, Mountainsmith began with Colorado outdoors folk who needed durable gear for their backcountry pursuits. Realising that commercial gear couldn’t keep up, they built their own, creating a brand deeply connected to the Rockies. Their first product, a backcountry sled, was followed by the patented lumbar pack, featuring the Delta Load Compression system to shift weight away from the shoulders, allowing for larger, heavier loads with less strain.

Mountainsmith continued to innovate with products like the Tyrol sidecountry ski pack and the K9 Pack, which introduced a safer “Y” yoke design for dogs. In the 80s and 90s, the company’s packs were crafted by home sewers across Colorado, fostering a community-based approach to production. Today, they remain headquartered in Golden, close to their roots.
