what we think
We recently took the MSR Tindheim 3 out for a series of camping trips across the UK, and it quickly stood out as a reliable and comfortable shelter when weight isn't the top priority. This is a tent built for those who value space, durability, and all-weather protection over ultralight specs.
The first thing that struck us was how roomy it is inside. For two people, it feels generous, and for three, it’s still very manageable. There’s a proper vestibule at the front, which gives you space to store muddy boots, wet kit, or even cook under cover if conditions demand it. It feels more like a basecamp tent than a minimalist backpacking setup, and that’s exactly where it shines.
Pitching is straightforward thanks to the tunnel design. Colour-coded poles and sleeves keep the process simple, even in wind or fading light. Once it’s up, the structure feels solid and confidence-inspiring. We had no concerns leaving it pitched overnight in exposed conditions. It holds its shape well and sheds wind effectively, especially when fully guyed out.
During one trip, the weather turned wet and gusty. The Tindheim 3 didn’t flinch. The fly and floor materials are robust and well waterproofed, and the venting system did a decent job of keeping condensation to a minimum. We also liked the high bathtub floor, which added a bit of reassurance in soggy conditions.
At just over 3kg, it’s definitely not something we’d choose for fast-and-light missions, but for bikepacking with a trailer, paddling trips, or car camping, it’s spot on. The weight is well justified by the interior space and strength you get in return.
Inside, there’s plenty of storage pockets to keep gear off the floor, and headroom is more than enough to sit up comfortably. It feels like a tent you could happily spend a few days in, especially if the weather keeps you tent-bound.
If you're after a tent with a bit more comfort, weather resistance, and room to breathe – especially for longer trips or rougher forecasts – the Tindheim 3 is a solid choice. It’s not the lightest in MSR’s range, but it’s one of the most dependable when the elements aren’t playing nice. -
