What we think
We’ve taken the MSR Access 2 out on several UK-based winter wild camps and cold-weather overnighters, and it’s proven to be a dependable shelter for when temperatures drop and conditions get more serious.
The Access 2 is designed as a lightweight winter tent, sitting somewhere between a full expedition-grade four-season tent and a typical three-season backpacking shelter. That middle ground makes it an excellent option for those wanting reliable weather protection without carrying the bulk of a mountaineering tent.
Inside, the tent offers a generous amount of space for two people and their winter gear. The interior height allows you to sit up comfortably and move around without feeling boxed in, while the dual vestibules give you decent storage for boots, packs, or even a bit of cooking in a pinch.
Pitching is straightforward with the hubbed pole design, though it does go up inner-first. It’s worth keeping that in mind if you expect very wet or snowy weather at camp. Once pitched and guyed out, the tent feels solid and stable. The frame holds its shape well under moderate snow loads and gusty wind, and the fabrics feel up to the job for extended use in colder conditions.
The Access 2 performs best in locations with moderate winter exposure, ideal for forest camps, open moorland, or tucked-in valley spots. While it can handle wind and snow, it's not made to withstand full alpine or high-mountain storm conditions. Ventilation is reasonable for a winter tent, helping manage condensation during colder nights.
At just over 1.7kg, it’s light enough to carry on multi-day winter trips, making it a practical choice for those balancing weight with warmth and shelter security. If you're venturing out in winter and want a tent that offers dependable protection without tipping into expedition-level gear, the Access 2 is a great piece of kit to have in your line-up. -
