In the early 1970s, three friends—John Burroughs, Jim Lea, and Neil Anderson—set out to revolutionise outdoor sleep comfort. John, an experienced mountaineer and Boeing engineer, desired a better sleeping pad for his adventures. Along with Jim and Neil, who had recently lost their jobs, they innovated a lightweight, comfortable, and durable sleeping pad. The breakthrough came when Jim realised that open-cell foam in an airtight chamber could create a self-inflating pad, combining foam and air for superior comfort and insulation.

By 1972, Cascade Designs, Inc. was established to bring the Therm-a-Rest self-inflating mattress to market, revolutionising outdoor comfort. In 1985, Therm-a-Rest expanded to Europe with a production facility in Midleton, Ireland, to better serve its international customer base.

Therm-a-Rest continued to innovate with products like the RidgeRest® and Z Lite™ pads, and in 1994, they pioneered the integration of sleeping pads and sleeping bags. Ongoing advancements, such as die-cut foams and pressure-mapping, kept Therm-a-Rest at the forefront of the industry. Recognitions included Backpacker Magazine's Editor's Choice Gold Award and being named one of the five best outdoor inventions of all time.

In 2009, the NeoAir® insulated air pad set a new standard for warmth-to-weight ratios in camping pads.

Today, Therm-a-Rest remains the worldwide leader in outdoor comfort, committed to quality and innovation. Designing products from personal experience and producing the majority in-house, Therm-a-Rest ensures adventurers can enjoy a better night's rest under the stars.
