WHAT WE THINK
The first thing we appreciated about the kit was how compact and lightweight it is. It’s about the size of a small snack bar, so it fit easily into a side pocket of our packs without taking up much room. Despite its small size, it managed to pack in a decent selection of both first aid items and repair tools, which made it feel like we were carrying a lot more than we actually were. For us, it was ideal for tackling minor scrapes, blisters, and the occasional gear malfunction, without weighing us down with a bulky, heavy kit.
In terms of first aid, the kit comes with the essentials you’d need for light injuries on the trail. We had a few minor cuts and scrapes, and the bandages, sterile wipes, and plasters were perfect for handling those. The blister pads also came in handy, especially after long days on the trail when we started to feel those hotspots forming on our feet. It was reassuring to have the basics covered without needing to carry a full first-aid kit, and everything was neatly organised and easy to access when we needed it.
As for the repair side of things, the Gorilla Tape and Kevlar needle and thread were the stars of the show. We ended up using the Gorilla Tape to patch up a small tear in a jacket, and it held up perfectly throughout the rest of the hike, even in damp conditions. The Kevlar needle and thread came in handy for stitching up a small tear in a backpack strap, and the durable thread ensured the repair was strong enough to last for the duration of our hike.
The only downside to the Common Gear Ultralight First Aid + Repair Kit is that it’s more geared toward minor injuries and repairs. If you’re going into more remote areas or are concerned about more serious injuries, you might want to carry additional medical supplies. Likewise, while the repair tools are great for small fixes, they won’t be suitable for anything more major, like a busted trekking pole or a completely ripped tent. -
